Archbishop calls for more courageous engagement

Archbishop Fred Hiltz Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate. It’s time for the Anglican Church of Canada to get innovative about the ways in which it engages the rest of the world, says Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate.

Delegates to General Synod 2010 can expect to be “challenged to stop looking inward,” according to Archbishop Hiltz. “We’re focusing on mission,” he told the Anglican Journal.

Archbishop Hiltz explained that the church needs to “start looking out to the world in very courageous ways…the Gospel calls us to be the church in the world.”

back to church sunday

THE early returns are in for Back to Church Sunday, and they’re stunning: 2,429 newcomers came to Anglican churches in the Diocese of Toronto on Sept. 27.

“This is beyond our wildest predictions,” says Bishop Philip Poole, who headed up efforts in the diocese. “It’s thrilling to see that many people accepting our invitation.”

A B.C. court ruling that four dissident Anglican parishes have no legal right to their buildings and land is being viewed as a watershed moment in a decade-long battle within the Church over same-sex blessings.

The case is sure to have ramifications for the other 35 dissident parishes spread across Canada that have chosen to leave the national church over doctrinal issues, raising questions about where they will worship if other courts follow suit and rule in favour of the Anglican Church of Canada on the property issue.
